Lately I’ve been hooked on Pinterest, and came across home wine bottle cutting- then it clicked! A self watering vase, why had I never thought of this before?!?!
It’s extremely easy and quick to do. Just a few simple steps and BAM you’re all done.
1. Clean your bottle. (Seems like a no brainer but most people forget this step.)
2. Fill the sink with ice water.
3. Tie a cotton piece of yarn around the bottle 5-6 times.
4. Roll the string off of the bottle and soak it in acetone/nail polisher remove for about 10-20 seconds.
5. Slide it back on and set the string on fire. (Make sure to spin the bottle to get an even cut.)
6. Right before the fire goes out, completely submerge it into the icy water. (It should snap in half easily, if not… try the process over again. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get the bottle hot enough. DON’T GIVE UP!)
By now you should have two pieces of the bottle and now you’re ready for a fancy plant.
Super cool!
how do you keep the dirt from falling into the bottom?
Make sure you pack it tightly. That should keep it from falling through. 🙂
awesome, will do… i can’t wait to make these!
Awesome! When you talk about cutting the bottle, what do you mean by spin it for an even cut? Like spin the two halves in opposite directions?
Spin the bottle while the bottle is “on fire” so to speak. That way the flame stays even, thus resulting in and even-ish cut. 🙂
I hope that made sense.
Wow! What a great idearing.hor a! I must try this. Looks simple enough. Thanks
Ooops! Meant to say, What a great idea.I must try this. Looks simple enough. Thanks for sharing.
The instructions say wrap the string around 5-6 times. I only see one string on the bottle. Please explain.
Lynne, that was one of my trail and error photos just to get an idea of how to wrap the string around the bottle. (Sorry for the confusion.) But yes, you will want to wrap the yarn/string around the bottle 5-6 times. I hope that clears up any misunderstanding. 🙂
How does the water get to the dirt
I started by watering the plant normally and over time the neck of the bottle sucks up the water, hence the “self watering” planter. 🙂
You need a wick of cotton string so from the water in the bottom to the soil in the top. It will not be sucked up with out the string.
thanks! 🙂
